For homes, restaurants, hotels and designers. Begin with a setting, a feeling and the scale of the space; we can then consider the subject and presentation.

A Georgian sitting room, a walnut library, a contemporary dining space. Begin with the artwork’s colour and proportions, then let architecture and furniture answer quietly.

A lotus painting brings soft green and pink into a European breakfast room. Its breadth answers the table, while a narrow frame leaves the painted surface clear.

A painting, a place to pause

Viewing distance, format, clear wall and gentle light: a practical way to begin choosing a place for a painting. Open a chapter to look more closely.

01Begin from the place you look

Stand at the doorway, then sit in your favourite chair. A long horizontal painting can gather a seating area together, but its scale should feel comfortable from the places where you actually spend time. Notice the surrounding furniture and clear wall as carefully as the painting itself.

02Let the format answer the wall
Vertical black-horse painting in a book-lined room

A tall painting gives a narrower wall a quiet centre. A smaller work invites a closer encounter beside a desk or chair. Try a paper template at the proposed framed size, then check it while standing and sitting. Compare different works and formats before committing to a size.

03Give the objects breathing room
Painting and ceramics sharing a quiet living room

Begin with one painting and one vessel. Repeat a colour gently, and leave space around each silhouette. A rounded vessel needs a sufficiently deep, stable surface; a tall neck needs clear space above it. Keep circulation open and fragile pieces away from a table’s edge.

04A gentle light is also care

Keep works on paper away from direct sunlight, radiators and sharp humidity changes. A framer can advise on conservation materials and ultraviolet-filtering glazing; these reduce risk without making light harmless. Send us the wall width, ceiling height, furniture dimensions and a room photograph to begin a considered proposal.

A considered arrangement

Give the eye
a place to rest.

Begin with the viewing position

Look from the doorway, your favourite chair and the dining table. Try a paper template before deciding a painting’s height.

Leave space around the form

Check the vessel’s widest point as well as its base. A deep shelf and a quiet background let the silhouette remain clear.

Let light reveal, gently

Soft light shows glaze and texture. Keep works on paper away from direct sun, radiators and rapid changes in humidity.
